Hi,
It’s always humbling to realize you spend 40% of your life lounging. “No, that’s not right”, I tell Tony as he confirms the math is correct. “I subtracted your time sleeping, working, running errands, working out, and going out. The rest of the time you’re lounging”.
In my head and wardrobe, I spend the majority of my time holding important work meetings in the Sunset Tower Hotel. When I’m not there, I’m bicoastal, pounding the streets of New York being fabulous. This is my alter ego’s life, who clearly has had the reigns on my shopping budget. In reality, you’ll find me in the basement, hunched over my laptop making designs for hours.
With my US visa stalled, my reality is I may be working from home indefinitely.
I love to manifest massive dreams, but maybe some of the clothes that hang in my closet should have stayed on a vision board. They certainly aren’t helpful in getting me dressed on a Tuesday. Buying less and buying better while expressing my self identity are my fashion goals, which means having clothes to wear in the life I *actually* live. I’ve accepted I will never lounge in anything that needs to be dry-cleaned.
I’ve historically spent as little money as possible on clothes to wear at home, despite spending 76% of my waking hours there. After I broke down what environments I actually live in and organized my digital wardrobe within their confines – I was shocked I could barely make more than a single outfit in the environments where I spend the most time.
No. wonder. getting. dressed. every. day. is. so. stressful.
Reality check.
Humbled and empowered with basic data, I’m excited to moodboard and imagine how I can embrace my lifestyle, allotting my dollars optimally for the environments I spend the most time.
I’d love to hear…
Do you shop for a fantasy self too? It’s such a seductive category to shop for.
Have you ever broken down the % of time you spend in your environments?
…Only to find you have the fewest outfits for how you spend most of your life?
Let me know!
Yours in trying to buy better and less,
Caitlin
